Interesting research from University of Bath, UK saying that protein supplements don't give any benefit to an athlete's performance.

The full article is available here: http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/2011/07/04/protein-supplements/

What are your experiences with protein supplements?

Do you find any difference with the time of day you exercise?

For me personally, if I exercise during the day the normal meals I eat give me enough, however I have found if I have a heavy session in the evening, a mug of hot milk before going to bed really helps prevent the aches the next morning although that might be more to do with sleeping better after the milk than the protein!

I tend to have a bit of protein straight after a hard training session to get my muscles recovering during the 15 minute window of opportunity that is supposed to be open during this time. Whey protein is meant to be the most easily absorbed form and it easier to take then carrying chicken breasts to the gym! The research doesn't seem to show whether it is beneficial for this or not. Personally unless your an advanced bodybuilder or doing extreme amounts of training then the protein you get in your diet should be enough.
