Hi there,
I've been reeding these forums and have started doing tabatas. I love them cos they're like the exercise version of fast food! But are they really enough? How can 4 minutes of exercise really be the same as going for a run?
Cheers,
Jon

I reckon they should be enough as long as your doing them properly with 100% effort, as well as doing exercises that work the whole body and aren't just hitting the same muscles over and over and missing others. Also make sure your mixing up the tabata workouts so that your doing both more strength orientated workouts as well as more cardio based workouts. Could be worth giving it a break every now and then and doing something different to prevent overtraining too.

Think the reason it works so well and gets better results than going for a run is the 20/10 second work/rest ratio. The 20 seconds flat out work period is just enough to be able to work flat out at 100% and the 10 second rest is just long enough to recover and go 100% again giving anaerobic improvements. Yet by only having 10 sec rest it keeps the aerobic aspect in play too. There is only 8 sets as done properly you wouldn't be able to do anymore without losing intensity which would reduce it's effects. If you've been doing it a few weeks try one of your old workouts/runs and see if it feels easier or if you've improved your times. be interesting to know what you find?

Thanks for the explanations. Will keep at it and make sure its at 100% effort. I guess anything less than 100% and its not worth doing?
I've only been doing it a couple of weeks now so will post back in a couple more weeks to let you know if I notice any changes/imporvements.
Cheers!

At less than a 100% it'll get you fitter but be a lot less effective, It'll get your fitter like an ordinary high intensity interval session but not necessarily the benefits of a tabata workout. Probaly a bit too short in timespan as well if not going 100%.

If you've got one where a heart rate monitor (if not see if you can get hold of one - they can be found quite cheap nowadays). You'll then easily see if your heart rate is increasing up high.
Obviously check with your doctor first as this type of exercise could be too much for you and so may not be right.

Well, I've been doing it a couple of weeks now and have to say I'm really impressed - have a lot more stamina now than before so going to keep them up.
One question though, how many tabatas should I be doing a week? What's excessive and what is the right amount I should be aiming for?

Could probaly do up to six a week. Just make sure that you give enough recovery so that your able to give 100% each time. Although there quick they are tough so be careful to allow enough recovery time. Will also depend on if your doing anything else?

Tabata intervals are 20 seconds of high intensity effort, followed by 10 seconds rest, repeated 8 times.
For it to work properly the 20 seconds of high intensity really has to be maximum flat out....
