Hi I was just wondering if going to the gym three times a week [or every other day] is better than everyday? I've been watching biggest loser and whilst I don't have the same problem, I do want to lose weight. They train everyday, but I've been told it's not beneficial? :\ Confused, can anyone help? Thank you

personally i find every other day best for me as it gives me time to rest and recover, i can do two days in a row, but then im really aching after that and cant do too much. another thing you could do if you want to do it more than every other day, is one day concentrate on lower body doing exercises on that area, then next day do upper body. that way your body does rest in between but your still burning calories. then have a complete day off, or gentle walk once a week.

Try doing one hard day followed by an easy day. Like hard run/circuits or weights followed by walking, light jogging or easy swimming etc. I find it best to work the whole body at once though doing large moves that work a lot of muscles at once. A lot depends on your level too. I shouldn't imagine the people on the biggest loser have built much of a fitness foundation so probaly not beneficial for them to over do it and trying to run before they can work so to speak.

The advice you got re not being beneficial to train everyday is probaly to prevent overtraining, but by alternating an easy or active rest day with a hard day you shouldn't over train. But listen to your body and see how you feel everyday. If your tired and sore go easy or work an area that feels ok. If your feeling good then you could step it up and go for it.

Thanks for that, I will try the Hard day, easy day rest day option. Although some people seem to ache the day after exercise, I always ache two days after. So by doing something light on the following day may help to keep my motivation up and still means I'll train hard three times a week-ish. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for your help.

Hope it helps, be interesting to know how you get on. If you find you ache two days later it could be because you've really worked hard or are new to the kind of training you're doing. I find if I have a really tough session or do something I don't usually do (like squash) the aches are delayed until two days later. I find sometimes doing something light helps loosen things up a bit and like you say will keep you motivated and also burning a few more calories. Also doing stretching and a good warm down after the initial training session will help prevent soreness. You could also try a few carbs like banana and protein after training and plenty of water, if you don't do this already.
