Home » Need some support or motivation? » How often should I weigh myself?

I'm wondering what other people do, how often should I weigh myself? I'm treying to lose weight but some days it seems I go up, then down, stay the same and it sometimes I eat less, but next morning weigh more! I'm just worried if I weigh only once a week I#ll put on weight as i'm not keeping on top of it but then doing it every day can be a bit depressing sometimes.

Personally I prefer to weigh myself more often than once a week but really it boils down to you as a person - if you are happy with once a week and don't need to check your progress (maybe you've got more willpower!) then great. The only thing I would say is if you do weigh in every day don't be surprised if some days your heavier and others no change - this is just how the body works and one reason why many people only weigh in once a week as that avoids these fluctuations from impacting too much on your motivation.

New_Colleen is right though, try to weigh yourself at the same time and in the same way so that you are doing a proper comparison. Also, clothes can add 0.5 to 1Kg to your weight - so allow for that.

I tend to weigh myself everyday to keep an eye on things and check it first thing every morning after going to the loo. This will give you the most accurate daily reading but I wouldn’t pay too much attention to daily fluctuations but rather what it is at the end of each week. I found I can vary a pound or two each day depending on how hydrated I am.

One reason weight can fluctuate a lot daily is if your muscle glycogen stores are low one day (causing you to weigh less) and the next day when the glycogen stores are replaced, water will get pulled back into the muscle and you’ll weigh more. Don’t worry though as this is only water weight and your fat levels will be the same.
For e.g one day you might spend an hour working hard in the gym and not replace the muscle glycogen that's been burned off. The next day you might do less exercise/eat more/have more carbs and these glycogen stores get refilled and this pulls water back into the muscle.

Apparently one gram of glycogen attracts 3 to 4 grammes of water to it!

Glycogen is the body's main source of stored energy, it's made from glucose from excess carbs. Glycogen is stored primarily in liver and muscle cells. It is stored with water, in the ratio 1 gram of carbohydrates to 3 grams of water.
During exercise it is released to be used as energy.

Basically in laymans terms my understanding is that excess carbs are converted to glycogen and are stored in the liver and muscles to be used later during exercise or if blood sugar levels fall to low. However if these stores are already full then the excess carbs will be stored as fat. I believe that excess protein can also be converted to glycogen as well but it is an inefficient process.
