Hi,

I moved a load of furniture at the weekend and now my back is killing me.

Do you guys know of any good exercises you could recommend to help strengthen my back?

Cheers,

Rudy

Hi Rudy

If its really bad it may be worth you going to the quacks, you never know it could be a slipped disk or something!

I have seen a physio in the past & they gave me a number of stretches to do.

You could always lie on our back lift one leg at a time keeping it straight and stretching out your hamstrings.

You could also try a hip bridge where you again lie on your back and then with your feet on the floor lift your torso keeping your shoulders on the floor.

These worked particularly well for me but my problem stemmed from tight hamstrings...

Rudy, first things first you should get medical advice to make sure nothing serious has happened. Secondly, rest it - if you start too soon you could make the injury worse. The problem with the back is it's always in use so will take longer to heal. A balanced approach to exercising your core will help stregthen it and prevent further injuries (see our library article for a good starting point).

This article on the NHS is also worth reading: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Back-pain/Pages/Introduction.aspx
