Here is an interesting bit of research on the effects of dehydration on performance. The article looks at Judo players who use the common method of dehydrating to make their target weights and the effect of this on their performance in competition shortly afterwards.

Whilst the research focuses on Judoka, it will be relevant to any sport where there is a weigh in, such as boxing, as probably the same methods are applied. Basically the conclusion is that there is not enough time to replace the lost fluid between the weigh in and the first contest resulting in reduced performance.

You can the article here: http://judoinfo.com/research17.htm

Interesting stuff! It's common practice in most combat sports to cut weight through water loss and i've heard of boxers who have lost up to 5 kg's in water in 24hrs before the weigh in. Whether the benefit of fighting in a lighter weight category outweighs any negative effect on their performance, i suppose depends on how long from weigh in to competition and also the competitor's individual ability to recover sufficiently in time.

It's definitely something worth testing out before a competition, perhaps as part of the training programme. It is also important to consider the effect on performance throughout the competition as you may be dehydrated before you start, further dehydrate during the contest which, if it is an event where you progress through rounds could really have a detrimental effect on your performance in the later rounds.

I read the other day that skimmed milk is better than most sports drinks for recovery and re-hydration. It was based research done by Loughborough University.

I've heard similar stuff that says chocolate milk makes a top recovery drink as good or better than other specialist products.
On a slightly different note,I used to buy recovery powders but realised that as they usually use what's stated as the optimal ratio of 1:4 protein to carbs, i'm paying the same price for a tub of what's basically three quarter's sugar as i would for a full tub of quality protein powder. So i now just buy the protein powder and then add Nesquik to it and it seems to do the trick at little more than a quarter of the price!
