Which side do you most often get the stitch?

Left:2
Right:1

I sometimes get the stitch when exercising, particularly long cardio workouts. Does anyone now what causes it and how I avoid it in the future?

As far as I know there is no firm evidence on what exactly causes the stitch and it is likely that everyone is different. The general consensus is that most people get it on the right side leading to the belief it is caused by the weight of the liver and other organs on the ligaments under the ribs, particularly when running. However I only ever get it on the left and generally when swimming, so the theory doesn't hold but my feeling in this instance is that it's some sort of strain relating to heavier breathing. It will be interesting to read other people's experiences and thoughts on this topic.

Out of interest I've added a poll to this thread to survey which side people get the stitch to see if it matches the research. Please feel free to add your vote!
