Most effective way is big compound movements. I'd recommend Squats, deadlifts, overhead presses and bench press. Do a light warm-up set and then do 1 to 5 reps for strength or about 6 to 12 reps if your after size.

What about body weight exercises? I don't have access to a gym or weights... :-(

Yes bodyweight exercises are good. Try pressups, pull-ups, dips, squats, one-legged squats, lunges and handstand press-ups. The handstand press-ups are pretty tough, if you can't manage the full version try supporting the legs and feet on a chair or fence/table to start off with and lift the legs slightly higher as your strength increases. To increase weight on the other exercises add a rucksack with weight to increase resistance. If your can't find a chin up/dipping bar you'll probaly find something suitable at the local playground if your not too self-conscious!
