When's the best time to exercise to burn fat? Is it first thing in the morning or later in the day?

I'm not aware of any particular time of day being better for burning fat. The best time is when you feel most comfortable and up for it. Personally I can't do first thing in the morning, I just can't face it. I prefer just before lunch or late evening a couple of hours after eating.

I agree, i know a few people who like training first thing and getting it out of the way, even as early as 6am. I can't handle that myself and prefer the evening especially, when outside running. I seem to have a lot more energy or maybe the air's just fresher. At the end of the day i reckon it's personal preference, everyone's different.

I found an article published that relates to this question:
Arnett, M. G. (2001). Effects of prolonged and reduced warm-ups on diurnal variation in body temperature and swim performance. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 33(5), Supplement abstract 893.

There is a link to the abstract here.

Basically the study looked at warm-ups on swimmers and the effect on performace in the morning and late afternoon and if varying the warm up time made a difference to performance (based on the body's temperature). What they found was that "no matter what warm-up was used, swimming performance in the evening was always significantly superior".

This may go some way to explaining why it's easier to exercise later in the day and we feel like we have more energy!

I read that exercising in the morning is best because your metabolism is increased, so you'll burn off more calories doing nothing for a few hours afterwards but if you exercise at night this is lost because it slows down anyway when you sleep so you lose the benefit of it.

Makes sense to me anyway and gives a reason to get up and go in the morning!

Cheers
