Many apples in the supermarkets are sprayed with a wax coating to make them look nice and shiny and keep them fresher for longer. Are organic apples also sprayed? (albeit with an organic wax?) Does anyone know?

In the UK, the Soil Association standards for producers has this requirement:

Section 41.2.9

You must not:
  • wash organic fruit and vegetables in water with m ore chlorine than allowed in drinking water (5ppm)

  • use wax coatings directly onto fruit or vegetables.

In the USA, different rules apply - see here: http://organic.lovetoknow.com/do-organic-apples-contain-wax for example.

Other countries and certificating bodies will also have their own rules.
