What is a food diary and why keep one?

A food diary is a place where you record what you’ve eaten, when you’ve eaten and why. If you keep a food diary you’ll become more aware of your eating habits and be able to predict when you'll need more willpower to resist those snacks. The other benefit of a food diary is that it will make you a lot more aware of what you've actually eaten and whether you're on track for your daily target. It may well be the arm twisting you need to not have that chocolate snack at 3pm!

As many of us are not online throughout the day or not permitted to access certain websites during working hours, we've created this printable food diary for you to take with you. The best way to use the diary is to record what you've eaten as you go - that way you won't forget anything if you simply complete it at the end of the day.

We’ve also included some columns for you to record your thoughts and feelings which may help you understand why you’re snacking or craving.

It may seem like a lot of hassle and effort to do this throughout the day, but if you’re serious about eating healthily and managing your weight, it’s important you know what you’re eating. Give it a try for a week and you’ll be surprised at the results!
